Around Hungary

Castle Town of Wine | Eger

In this video, we are exploring the unique town of Eger!

Eger is a historic town in Hungary with a Castle, a cute inner town and some excellent local Wine! If you are looking for a day-trip away from Budapest while traveling in Hungary, this could be one!

Eger is 2 hours away from Budapest by train, or about an hour and a half with car. This historic town was formed inn the 10th century and became an important religious center, known for it’s narrow cute alleys and the Castle which held back the Turkish Army during the Ottoman Empires conquest!

Eger is surrounded by many hills ideal to grow grapes for wine. The local Bikavér red cuvee can be interesting for wine enthusiasts, but there is also some excellent Pinot Noir as well. For those who enjoy white wines you have many options too, like the local cuvee known as Egri Csillag (Star of Eger), also some Rieslings or Chardonnays.

Eger is also a nice Area for those who want to go Hiking. Nature is close and there are many nice villages in the area to use as starting places for Hikes, since the Bükk National Park is right here!

During our visit, we went to the following places you may find interesting:

Manooka Cafe: Cute little specialty coffee place hidden in an allyway just right next to the main scquare. https://g.page/manookakavezo?share

Macok Bistro is just at the foot of the castle. The prices are not cheapest but you get great service and a nice ambiance and amazing food. Make sure to have reservation especially if you visit on the weekend: https://g.page/MacokBisztro?share

Kávézz.On Coffee is a specialty coffee place, where you get your coffee from a window, so dont expect to have places to sit. This is a true coffee to go place 🙂 https://goo.gl/maps/SVcKcxprjXzJGSVU8

We stayed at the Hotel Villa Völgy, check out the video where we give you a tour of the Hotel and our feedback. This is our go to Hotel when we stay in Eger.
