Tihany | The Charming Town of Lake Balaton

In this Video we visit one of the most Charming little Towns at Lake Balaton in Hungary, full of rich history and culture!

The Hungarian Countryside offers some cute villages and towns to visit and one of the highlights of those has to be Tihany. A place that is part of Hungary’s history for almost a 1000 years, it can be seen from miles away as the famous Tihanyi Bencés Apátság (Benedictine Tihany Abbey) towers over the Peninsula of Lake Balaton. But besides the Abbey, the small town has some charming little streets with cute houses and many artisan shops. Lake Balaton offers many interesting places to visit.

The most common product of Tihany is Levander, the place is famous for it. There is an insane amount of stuff that have Levandar in them. From Beer to Pálinka, from Cosmetic Goods to Decorative items. You’ll definately find something you can take as a souvenir. You can even visit a Levander Center where you can learn more about this plant and how it is used in everyday products! (I would not recommend the Levander Pálinka for it’s flavour though…. it’s an experience)

The town of Tihany has many traditional Hungarian Restaurants (called Csárda, or Fogadó) so if you wish try out some local dishes, you can easily find a place as the town isn’t huge it’s easy to get around and visit any of the eateries when you are hungry. We eat at Pál Csárda. The Tihany Peninsula has many hills and forests, you can easily spend a day here hiking around, or when it’s the hot summer you can rest on the beaches. We grabbed a coffe before heading back home at Kotyogós Kávéterasz.

We visited Tihany from the City of Siófok using the Boat services. Similar services run from Balatonfüred and Szántód as well. But you can visit the town also from Budapest by using Public transport. It will be around 2,5 hours to reach Tihany. With car it should be under 2 hours to get to this town from the capitol.
